Rebate amounts went up for installations completed through October 31, 2026. What you qualify for depends on which utility serves your address, not on which contractor you hire. None of these programs require a certified or participating contractor.

How the rebate reaches you
1–6
months

You pay the full installation cost upfront, and the rebate comes back afterward. Some programs send the check to you and others send it to JetPipe, in which case we forward it to you.

Some cities want the rebate filed before work begins and others accept it after the final inspection. We confirm which rule applies to your address before we schedule the installation, and we file or assist with the application either way. We also compare every program your home qualifies for and submit under the one paying the most at the time of your install.

How the Rebate Reaches You

You pay the full installation cost upfront, and the rebate comes back to you afterward. Expect one to six months, depending on the program and how quickly the city closes out the permit. Some programs send the check straight to the homeowner and others send it to JetPipe Plumbing, in which case we forward it to you. Either way the filing is on us, and we tell you at the estimate stage which path your address falls under so there are no surprises about timing.

Start to finish

How a Heat Pump Water
Heater Installation Happens

A heat pump water heater is not a swap-in replacement. The city has to approve it before the unit goes in, and the electrical has to be verified first. Here is the whole sequence, start to finish.

01
Request and site visit

You call or fill out the form on this page and we schedule an on-site assessment. Our technician photographs the space where the unit will sit and checks the details the code cares about: where the condensate can drain, where your main panel is located, and how much clearance the unit will have.

02
Permit department review

The photos and measurements go to our in-house permit department. They run the load calculation and check whether your existing panel supports the unit without an upgrade.

03
Your estimate

We send you the load calculation result and a written estimate. Nothing is ordered and nothing is committed until you say yes.

04
City plan set

Once you approve, the permit department draws the plan for the city and prepares the load calculation table, along with your own copy of the documentation.

05
City approval and rebate filing

We submit for the permit. If your program requires the rebate to be reserved before work starts, we file it at this stage.

06
Scheduling and brand choice

With the permit in hand we set your installation date, and you choose between Bradford White, A.O. Smith, and Rheem.

07
Installation day

Most installations run three to five hours. Your old tank is disconnected, removed, and hauled away as part of the job.

08
City inspection

The city assigns an inspection date. One of our staff attends with the complete documentation. These slots are morning only, two hours wide, and scheduled the day of. The inspector verifies code compliance and signs off.

09
Rebate submission

With the inspector's signature in hand we return to the rebate and submit the completed file.

10
Rebate payment

The check arrives in one to six months and goes to you, or to us to forward on to you.

From your first call to installation day is typically one to two weeks. The city permit step sets the pace, not our schedule.

Permits, plans, inspection

Handled in house

Heat pump water heaters require a city permit before installation, which is why we
keep a permit department on staff rather than outsourcing it. They run the load
calculation, confirm whether your panel can carry the unit as is, draw the plan set
the city asks for, and pull the permit. After installation, one of our people attends
the city inspection in person with the full documentation, so you are not the one
standing in the garage explaining paperwork to an inspector.

Electrical & sizing

Most Homes Do Not
Need a Panel Upgrade

The electrical is what worries most homeowners, and with good reason: many models call for a dedicated 240V 30A circuit, and in an older home that can mean panel work. We install 120V plug-in models that run from a standard outlet, which lets most homes skip the upgrade entirely. Our permit department runs the load calculation before you commit, so you know exactly which route your home needs, and what it costs, before anything is ordered.

Choosing the Right Size

We size the unit around how your household actually uses hot water rather than matching whatever tank happens to be there now. A heat pump recovers more slowly than a gas tank, so a home that runs showers back to back in the morning is usually better served one size up.

What Affects the Cost

Heat pump installations are quoted per home rather than from a price list. The number moves with tank size, whether the electrical can stay as it is, how far condensate travels to a drain, clearance work, and model tier.

Typical turnkey pricing
$6,000–$6,500 for 50 gallons
$6,900–$7,500 for 60 gallons
Around $8,000 for 80 gallons
With a $3,000 to $4,000 rebate applied afterward, the net cost drops substantially. You get your exact number in writing after the site visit.

What Is Included

The price covers the unit, installation, permit and plan work, removal and haul away of your old tank, and our staff attending the city inspection.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What rebate can I get in my city?

It depends on your utility. Homes served by WestLight Energy in San Mateo County and homes in Palo Alto served by City of Palo Alto Utilities currently qualify for $4,000. Homes served by Silicon Valley Clean Energy, which covers Sunnyvale, Mountain View, Cupertino, and neighboring cities, and homes in San Jose served by San Jose Clean Energy currently qualify for $3,000. These increased amounts run through October 31, 2026.

No. None of the programs in our service area restrict you to a listed contractor. What matters is that the installation is permitted and passes city inspection, which is exactly what our permit department is there to handle.

Usually not. We install 120V plug-in models that run from a standard outlet, which avoids panel work in most homes. We run the load calculation during the estimate stage, so you find out before you commit rather than on installation day.

Plan on one to two weeks from your first call to installation day, most of which is the city permit. The installation itself runs three to five hours, and the city inspection follows on a date the city assigns.

Yes, we do. Disconnecting, removing, and hauling away the old tank is part of the job and part of the quoted price.

You pay for the installation in full upfront and the rebate follows, generally within one to six months. Some programs pay the homeowner directly and others pay us, in which case we forward it to you.

Yes, they do. These units operate best between 40 and 90 degrees, and Bay Area garages stay inside that range year round, which is why the garage is the most common placement we install.

For the installation, yes, someone needs to let us in, and the work usually takes three to five hours. The city inspection is a separate day and the city assigns it, always a morning slot about two hours wide. One of our staff meets the inspector with the documentation, so you only need to provide access.
