What does an ADU need for its sewer connection?
It depends on the city and on how the unit is metered. Some jurisdictions allow the ADU to tie into the existing lateral if that line has the capacity and is in sound condition. Others require a dedicated lateral to the main. We check the existing line on camera and confirm the rule with the building department before quoting, because the answer changes the cost substantially.
Where does the cleanout go?
At or near the property line in most cases, positioned so the line can be reached from the surface without lifting a fixture. Where the run is long or turns sharply, a second one goes closer to the building. Placement is set by code and by what the inspector will approve, not by convenience.
How long does the permit take?
Usually days rather than weeks for a straightforward residential lateral, longer if the connection sits under a public sidewalk or street and an encroachment permit is needed. We pull the permit as part of the job and schedule the dig around the approval instead of ahead of it.
