Heat Pump Water Heater Maintenance — Keep It Running at Full Efficiency
A heat pump water heater is the most energy-efficient option available — but it has more components than a standard tank, and those components need periodic attention. Skipping maintenance costs you efficiency and can shorten the unit’s lifespan.
JetPipe Plumbing provides full annual maintenance for heat pump water heaters: air filter cleaning, condensate drain inspection, thermostat and settings check, and a complete system review. We service all major HPWH brands.
Air Filter Cleaning
The air filter keeps dust and debris out of the heat pump compressor. A clogged filter forces the unit to work harder and reduces efficiency. Should be cleaned every 3 to 6 months — we show you how on the first visit.
Condensate Drain Inspection
Heat pump units produce condensate that must drain properly. A blocked drain can cause water damage or trigger the unit to shut down.
Thermostat and Mode Settings Check
We verify the unit is running in the correct mode (heat pump only, hybrid, or electric) for your household’s needs.
Evaporator Coil Inspection
Dust buildup on the evaporator coil reduces heat transfer efficiency. We inspect and clean as needed.
Electrical Connection Check
We inspect the 240V supply connection and verify the unit is drawing within normal parameters.

Every 3 to 6 months, depending on how dusty your installation location is. Garages with regular traffic may need more frequent cleaning. We show you how to do it yourself on the first service visit.
What happens if I skip the annual service?
Primarily, efficiency drops as the evaporator coil collects dust and the condensate drain can partially block. In a worst case, the unit shuts down on a thermal protection fault. Most manufacturer warranties also require documented annual service.
Is maintenance on a heat pump water heater more complicated than a gas tank?
There are more items to check, but nothing is particularly complex. The air filter is the main task homeowners handle themselves. The annual professional visit covers the rest.
Can you service any brand of heat pump water heater?
Yes. We service Rheem, A.O. Smith, Bradford White, Stiebel Eltron, and other major HPWH brands.
Do I still need to flush the tank on a heat pump water heater?
Yes. Heat pump water heaters still have a storage tank, and sediment builds up over time just as it does in a conventional tank. We include a tank flush in the annual service.
Does my heat pump water heater have an anode rod?
Most models do. We check and replace it as needed during annual service.
